Justice Sanjiv Khanna serves as the 51st Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India. He was appointed to the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019, and currently holds the positions of Patron-in-Chief of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and Chairperson of the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal (NJA). Previously, he served as the Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC) from June 17, 2023, to December 25, 2023, and as Executive Chairman of NALSA from December 26, 2023, to November 10, 2024.

Justice Khanna completed his legal education at the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, and enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983. He initially practiced in the District Courts of Delhi before establishing his practice primarily in the Delhi High Court. Over the course of his legal career, he handled cases in various domains, including Constitutional Law, Direct Taxation, Arbitration, Commercial Laws, Company Law, Land Laws, Environmental Protection Laws, and Medical Negligence. He served as Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department for seven years and later as Senior Standing Counsel (Civil) for the National Capital Territory of Delhi for a brief period before being elevated to the Delhi High Court.Â

Additionally, he worked as an Additional Public Prosecutor in the Delhi High Court and assisted the court as amicus curiae in numerous criminal cases and matters of public significance.

On June 24, 2005, Justice Khanna was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court and was subsequently made a Permanent Judge on February 20, 2006. During his tenure at the Delhi High Court, he held key positions, including Chairman/Judge-in-Charge of the Delhi Judicial Academy (DJA), the Delhi International Arbitration Centre (DIAC), and the District Court Mediation Centers.
